OUR HISTORY
One early summer evening in June 1991, six people met together to form what was
later to become the Main Street church of Christ.
Richard and Martha Miller, Web and Mary Erwin, Bobbie Burdette and Arlen
Harbour met at the home of Web and Mary Erwin to worship and pray for a new
place to worship.
Prayers were answered on August 1st, 1991 when
Bobbie Burdette discovered a small two bedroom house for rent on Main Street.
The members quickly gathered and called the owner and rented the house with the
option to buy in six months. Odd
chairs were collected from their homes and some were donated from the community
center. Web Erwin built a podium
and purchased a communion plate.
With Richard Miller as the speaker, Main Street
church of Christ held its first service on August 4th,
1991.
By January 1991 the congregation had grown to twenty-one members. The house had been purchased along with
six other lots and another house.
Bibles and song books were donated and contributions were given to
purchase other needed items.
The Main Street church of Christ celebrated its first anniversary in
August 1992 and held its first gospel meeting on August 27th, 1992. Sixty-two people
came together to hear the word of God by borrowed speakers from other
congregations.
As the Church grew, larger plans were made to renovate and expand the
house to accommodate new members and visitors alike.
Between January and July 1993, church members and others from all over
the community donated their time, strength, prayer and pledges that helped the
little house on Main Street to become a new church.
By April 1995, new pews, a communion table, baptistery and podium were
added. The small bedrooms were
made into classrooms, and the auditorium and parking lot were
completed.
Over the years, everyone in the congregation had come together to build a
church. Not without suffering some
difficulties, they all stood together and held fast to prayers and
dedication. Although the church
did not have a permanent preacher, prayers were answered again when minister
Doug Minton came for a trial sermon and was hired on the spot in April
1995.
By April 1998, plans were made to expand the auditorium.
Two new classrooms, new carpet, more pews, a nursery and two additional
restrooms were added. Again we
outgrew the facility. A new
structure was built on the lot next door that was purchased.
Construction was started in late summer 2006.
We met for the first time on November 12th,
2006.
Today, the Main Street church of Christ has over 100 members in
attendance and continues to grow.
With what started as a small rented house is now a house of worship,
prayer and song.
